General Information

United Kingdom

When dealing with public authorities, letting agencies, employment agencies and other bodies in the UK, you should expect to speak English.

The UK is very ethnically diverse, so whilst many public authorities and government departments provide information in languages such as Urdu, Arabic and Gujarati, it is almost certain that this information will not be available in other European languages. It is also unlikely that you will find employment if you do not speak any English at all.

The UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office web site includes listings, web site links and contact details for all the UK's Overseas Missions.

Most EU countries have a central British Embassy, and also Consulates in other main cities, that deal with visas and immigration. The web site for the Embassy of your own country in the UK may also contain practical information about working and living in Britain.

The web site http://193.63.76.64/world/leas_a_i.html contains listings of all of the British Local Authorities, with links to their web sites where these exist. These sites contain useful information about local areas.
