General Information

Reognition of qualifications (Spain)

Professional and managerial staff’s foreign qualifications are recognised under different directives. For example there are:

  • Sector-specific directives providing virtually automatic recognition of certain qualifications for doctors, medical consultants, pharmacists, veterinary surgeons, etc. This is due to the fact that there has been previous coordination at training level.
  • General directives (Directive 89/48/EEC and 92/51/EEC), which should help to boost the free circulation of qualified professional and managerial staff who have undertaken training lasting more than three years minimum, if they are allowed to exercise their profession in their State of origin and this profession is regulated in Spain.

The different application forms and instructions are available on the Internet. Depending on the profession concerned, there are several relevant authorities which decide whether or not a qualification is valid.

The Ministry of Education and Science’s General Section for the Recognition and Validation of Qualifications (Subsección General de Títulos, Convalidaciones y Homologaciones) is responsible for providing information on the subject.
