General Information

Other practical information (Spain)

The Social Security number allocated to you will be sent to you by the Social Security on a card (cartilla) with your full name and Identity Card number on it.

However, as the relevant powers have been devolved to some Autonomous Regions, in some cases you will have to apply for another, more up-to-date card with a magnetic strip and/or micro chip, available from health centres.

Further information: Social Security (choose 'trabajadores' then 'afiliación')

NIE (Foreigners’ Identification Number): This number is equivalent to the NIF (Tax Identification Number) used by nationals. Any police station can issue one to you.

Driving Licence issued by the different European Union Member States are recognised in Spain, but as soon as you have a permanent address, you have six months to send your details to the Central Registry of Drivers (Registro Central de Conductores e Infractores) at any Provincial Traffic Headquarters (Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico).

Further information at the Ministry of the Interior

Bank Account: Any EU citizen can open a bank account at the bank of his/her choice. In theory, all you need to do is present an identity card, but as there are no regulatory minimum requirements, each bank will have its own policy.
