General Information

Conditions of residence (Spain)

Citizens of the European Union are entitled to come and go freely, to circulate and to remain in the Spanish State. With the exception of Civil Service posts, they may enjoy access to any employment under the same conditions as Spanish nationals.

Entry requirements will vary depending on the length of stay:

  • Less than three months: an identity card or passport is sufficient.
  • More than three months but less than one year: you will need to apply for a temporary visitor’s permit.
  • More than one year: you will be issued with a residence permit for five years (family members without European Union Member State nationality will receive exactly the same residence permit). There is automatic renewal.
  • A return journey every day or once a week: you will be issued with a specific five-year card for workers who regularly cross the border for work purposes. There is automatic renewal

The different visitors’ and residence permits are issued by the Foreigners’ Bureau (Oficina de Extranjeros) and Police Stations.
