General Information

Finding a job (Portugal)

Before coming to Portugal to find a job you should go to the Portuguese Consulate in your country of origin, for a translation of your University degree and/or diploma and other documents which you may need to show to an employer or to a job interview panel. http://www.deb.min-edu.pt

Most of the job advertisements for PM&S staff may be found in weekly editions of the newspapers, but some of them can also be found in the major daily newspapers.

Advertisements for jobs on the internet is not yet popular, but this is changing a lot and some weekly newspapers mention that they will soon start using the internet. In any case, some job advertisements can be found at http://www.egor.pt and http://www.jn.pt both of them in Portuguese It is, however, hard to find the job section on the latter of these two sites.

The Public Employment Services (IEFP) is useless for PM&S. However, for those who have been working for some time in their own countries, it is necessary to go to the Portuguese Public Employment Services for registration and an application form to ensure that you do not lose your entitlement to unemployment benefits.

It is useful for the persons who intend to do this, to contact the Euro-advisers, and this can be done in your own country before leaving - http://www.iefp.pt

It is naturally acceptable to address a letter with a CV directly to companies, asking for a job, but it rarely works in Portugal unless the candidate has something completely new to contribute to the production process. In this case a period of negotiation can commence.
