General Information

Other practical information (Belgium)

It is important to know that Belgium is officially a federal state. Belgium is divided into 3 regions (Flanders - Brussels - Wallonia) and 3 Communities (Dutch speaking, French speaking, German speaking). In a nutshell, the immigrant has to know that all administrative steps have to be done in
  • Dutch (also known as 'flemish') in Flanders (Vlaanderen)
  • French in Wallonia (Wallonie)
  • French or Dutch in Brussels (Bruxelles - Brussel) (officially bi-lingual)
  • German or French in a very small region between Liège and the German border (officially bi-lingual)

It is obviously not easy to manage and although most Belgians will be helpful with foreigners, bureaucratic rules are rather strict, and a little knowledge of the local languages will help a great deal.

Opening a bank account is governed by the principle of contractual freedom, so the parties must clearly demonstrate their wish to enter into an agreement. The terms of the contract are indicated in the bank’s regulations. Please see the Your Europe website, for more information.
