Emmanuel Mermet's Book: Professional and Managerial Staff in Europe
This book published by EUROCADRES and the ETUI, with the financial support of the European Commission, covers 16 European countries
It gives a precise view on how P&MS are organised in Europe and involved in collective bargaining. Some copies, in English, French or German, are available at our secretariat.
Professional and Managerial Staff (P&MS) exercise wide-ranging responsibilities in the economic and social life of European countries. They take their professional identity seriously and have nowadays come to play an active role in the trade unions, perceiving the importance of collective arrangements as well as of the processes of individualisation which are the stuff of their working environment.
Few attempts have been made at European level to analyse the resulting multi-faceted phenomenon but such is the task here embarked upon the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI). On the basis of an in-depth exchange with the member organisations of the Council of European Professional and Managerial Staff (EUROCADRES), this study presents an over-all view of the situation and of developments underway, seeking to answer a number of questions: how do P&MS tend to be organised? How are they involved in collective bargaining? What attitude do they display in relation to increasingly diverse forms of work and the associated contracts?
Gathering together strands bearing strong traces of national, cultural factors and influences, this book represents a contribution to a European approach to a rapidly expanding group of the working population.
