Who are European Professional and Managerial Staff?
The diversity of professional identities, together with the changes of the past decades have impacted upon Professional and Managerial staff (P&MS), whether they are skilled professionals or managers, working in small private firms, in large manufacturing groups or in the public sector
The plurality of cultures and national systems of training have led not only to diverse forms of work organisation but also to different methods of social representation and organisation
Therefore some elements still constitute common identifying references and common behaviour for P&MS: Two elements are especially significant:
- a higher level of education and skills,
- and the practice of professional responsibilities.
They are used as basic reference for the international definition of P&MS set up by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
Here you will find some statistical information about P&MS in Europe (please consult the chapter on working conditions for more information on P&MS):
New project: Professional and Managerial Staff in the Knowledge Based Society
This project aims to improve the cooperation with academia and the research that is being done about professional and managerial staff. There is still a knowledge gap concerning P & MS, and a stronger focus on this particular group is needed.
